FTP Server

To know what is a FTP Server, please first read the Wikipédia article : FTP. To make it short, it is a small program that you install on your computer and allows you to share everything you want with the whole world. Amazing, doesn't it ?

Why using a FTP Server ?

Some webmails allow you to share up to 20 Mo files, other websites allow you to share files up to 2 Go. But uploading takes time (a LOT of time), plus you don't want to share it with the whole world. A FTP Server allows you to share all the files you want (no matter the size) with the people you choose.
And with your own FTP Server, it is a step towards freedom, trust me.

Programs

I think you should use Filezilla Server. You can download it from the official or from my server version 0.9.39 (FileZilla_Server-0_9_39.exe). I like to use TYPSoft FTP (ftpserv111.exe) but as there is no support anymore...

How it works ?

In a few words :
1. Install Filezilla Server (around 2 Mo !).
2. You decide who can access your files (by creating logins and passwords),
3. And which files you want to share.
4. Get your IP address (with monip.org for example, yours : 38.107.179.212) because this is the address you are going to give to your family and friends.
5. Check that your router, if you have one, allows FTP communications (by not blocking FTP port usually 21 but it can be anything).
6. Be sure that your firewall allows it too.
Then people who want to access your FTP Server must use a FTP client like (FileZilla Client for example), and get your IP and logins you will give them.

Installation

There are a lot of HOW-TO online about FileZilla Server (FileZilla Server Forum. So I am not going to explain it to you one more time. BUT I create a 'Questions/Answers' below to share everything you want.

WEB Server

First : please read Wikipédia : HTTP Server (focus on Apache).

Why using a WEB Server ?

To share everything ! More than a FTP Server, a WEB Server IS FREEDOM ! You can share files (AVI, MP3, DOC, PDF, ... No limits ! No matter the size even if it is not the point of a web server) & thoughts, which is by far the most important. You can share what you know the best with a simple text file.

How it works ?

In a few words :
1. Install Wampserver (get it there : Wamp Server).
2. Then put your files in the WWW folder that Wampserver created. Reading HTML for the Dummies will be a good start !
3. If you have a router, redirect the 80 port to your computer.
4. Be sure that your firewall allows the access to the 80 port.
5. Use a free DNS service provider (No-ip for example) to get a Domain... Or use your IP address !
Then share your address with the world !
